Morphological description

Basidiomata small to medium-sized, 4–7 cm high, 3.5–6 cm broad, coriaceous, infundibuliform, proliferous from a central common base, rosulate, usually with several to many laterally confluent spathulate to flabelliform pilei or valves, uplifted. Margin thin, serrulate or lobed to wavy. Abhymenial surface on the superior side, nearly smooth to somewhat radially rugulose or wrinkled, often zonate, greyish to black (1D1–1F1) in general, with whitish to greyish yellow (1B3–7) zones at margin, dark grey (1F1–2) to black at base. hymenial surface mainly on the inferior side, subglabrous, radially rugulose or longitudinally wrinkled from base to margin, more or less zonate, dull lilac to dull violet (15C3, 16D2–4) in general, whitish, pale grey-yellow (1B3–7) to alutaceous (4C2–4) at margin, darker to blackish at base, weakly and sparsely tuberculose. hymenium mostly on inferior surface of pileus, but rarely and partially on the margin of abhymenial surface. Context 1–1.5 (2) mm thick at the thickest portion of pileus, thinner at margin and thicker towards the base, yellowish white (1A2), greyish brown (4B2) to dull violet (15D3). Odour mild when fresh, somewhat smelly when dried, or with the beef jerky flavour of T. ganbajun.

Basidiospores [90/3/12] (5.2) 5.7–6.3 (6.7) × (4.6) 5.0–5.4 (5.8) μm, [Q = (1.03) 1.13–1.16 (1.19), Q= 1.16 ± 0.06] (including ornamentations, up to 1 µm long), globose to subglobose, nodulose to verrucose or ridged, pale greenish grey to buff in 5% KOH, IKI-, CB-. Basidia 15–24 × 5–7 μm, clavate, hyaline, 2-or 4-spored, with short sterigmata. hyphal system monomitic. Subhymenium: generative hyphae 3–5 μm in diameter, grey-brown in 5% KOH, IKI-, CB+, branched, septate, with clamp-connections, smooth, thin-walled (<1 μm). Context: loosely parallel hyphae, 2–3 μm diam, hyaline to slightly brown in 5% KOH, IKI-, CB+, septate, slightly thick-walled (<1 μm). Cystidia none seen.
